Denies Decline Iv Welfare Rolls Due to Publicity

Any link between withdrawals

from the welfare rolls by persons’

fearing publicity and the rapid decline in public assistance case:

loads: was denied. today by Maurice O. Hunt, state welfare administrator.

of the anti-secrecy Jaw passed this year by the Indiana: Legislature, he declared. Of the- 13,092 closures of old age assistance .cases between Jan. 1. 1850, and June 30, 1951. only 371 were voluntary withdrawals, Mr. Hunt said. In the first six months of 1951, there were 172 such. withdrawals. “Voluntary withdrawals are not new,” Mr. Hunt said. Between January and June, 1950, there were 73, but that the number increased between July and December to 126.— “The started in the last half of 1950 rather than after January 1951,” he asserted. A Welfare Department report of closures for the 18 months beginning Jan. 1, 1950, showed that death was the major cause for closihg cases. Since last Jan. 1, 2797 of the 4849 cases closed were for this reason. Increased resources, increased old age and survivors insurance benefits, accounted for 3743 . closures in the 18-month period.
