Death

| By DONNA MIKELS Times Staff Weiter

MARION, Sept. 27-—A whitehaired, grandmotherly- -looking woman who never traded in her calico aprons for the starthed white of her ‘profession was dead today, after more than a halfcentury of medical practice, Death came: yesterday through »the door that was never locked . at the neat white frame home and office of Dr. Nettie Bainbridge

Writing the obituary of her friend Dr. Powell was especially difficult today for Times Reporter Donna Mikels, Twenty. seven years ago today in Mar-

sible to remember an antiseptic “doctor's office” smell at Dr. Net-

tie's.. It may have been there, and| . probably was. But in memory it's

drowned out by waves of ‘the odor of freshly “put up” jelly which rushed through the opened door. If this makes Dr. Powell sound like a part-time doctor it’s wrong.

. She was doctor from the time

she opened her office in 1893 until her own last illness made her an invalid six years ago. She was a 24-hour-a-day-doctor, paradoxically.always out making her home calls, yet always on hand when, without appointment, patients dropped by.
