Like a Pleasant Ranch

By DEAN H. ROBINSON The home for this week is an almost perfect example of a new American tradition, the Ranch House. Scorned by some. and loved by many, the ranch

The low pleasant lines of this week’s home make it appear to be almost part of the ground itself. The architect has designed the exterior of ledge rock and shingles, but it would look y attrac i tive if constructed of wood siding, cinder block or brick veneer. The garage adds to the beautiful lines but could be added at a later date to save first costs. The “protected front entrance opens into a spacious living-dining area. Combining these two rooms allows for a more pretentious appearance and with modern adpta- ' ble furniture there does not have to be a separate dining space, The kifchen is combined with the laundry and heater room and this compact design keeps all of the work area in one part of the house. There is even room here for a snack bar where the children ean have their breakfast The three bedrooms are large

closets with sliding doors. The bath is located between two of these rooms and is convenient for guests as well as the members of the household. Thers is no basement although if one was desired the stairs leading down could be inthe laundry

“The British are far ahead of the United States in the use of fluorescent lamps for street lighting. Results are so effective in the form of good visibility and eye: comfort that fluorescent

street lighting is bound to come

in America.” - : This was reported by Willard C. Brown, manager of General

. {Blectric’s Lamp Division, upon his return from the 12th meeting of

the International Commission on Illumination, held at Stockholm, Sweden, from June 26 to July 5. One has only to spend an evening at Rugby, according te Mr.

Brown, where thers are numerous

thoroughfares lighted with fluorescent units developed by the British Thompson-Houston Co. to realize that fluorescent lamps are “the light source of the future” for streets. Here in the United States, he pointed out, only a very few sections of streets are as yet lighted with fluorescent units. . These are notably in Detroit,. Lynn, Mass,

the change to fluorescent in this] {country has been the result of the belief held by many authorities that it's too expensive, according to Mr. Brown,

He pointed out that many lighting people had had the same attitude in 1939 and 1940 toward the idea of lighting offices, factories and stores with fluorescent lamps. “But results were so out standing that users found the money somehow,” he said. Home lighting abroad is characterized by a scarcity of portable famps, and the use of massive ceiling fixtures which often employ as many as four to-12 lamp bulbs, always shielded with glass, parchment, cloth, plastic or metal.
