One Man's Question—

Are" DOYS

By ROBERT L, CHASE Seripps Howard Staff Writer I heard a few snickers the other night over a bunch. of penned-up dogs in Springfield, O., who refused to take their liberty ‘when it was offered to them.

Perhaps you saw the dispatch reporting how the gates to an animal shelter containing 30 dogs were smashed and 29 of the animals remained inside waiting for the keeper. Well, what's to laugh? These dogs were merely reversing a time-honored human procedure and going, as it were, to the people. » s » AND IF we bipeds continue to insist so vehemently on going to the dogs, why can’t the dogs be accorded a similar privilege in reverse, and without any snickering? Consider, if you will, the situation of these 30 dogs penned up in the animal shelter. : They had a nice place to live: They were eating regularly. They obviously Hked their surroundings and their keeper. They had, in a. word, complete security, without any necessity of

‘Tustiing so much as a Hay hore! {or raiding a neighborhood garbage can, ] Furthermore, their colony in-cludeéd-—at least I presume it did —what they regarded as’'some of | the nicest canines in town. Cee

IN EXCHANGE for all these advantages, they give up only a freedom to choose. To choose where they would live, providing they could swing it, and what they would eat, providing they could get their hands on it, Freedom to select what dogs they would roam with and where they would do their roaming.

If they are observant dogs— as they apparently are—they have noticed that people are not as eager as they once were to make this kind of an exchange, They must have watched trade after trade of this sort of freedom for the terrifically important

as security,

pretty good to them.

They undoubtedly have a pretty full and complete life. oe But I do. prefer to think on the one dog who was missing, the 30th animal who didn’t answer roll call. : I take it he still is a rugged individualist whom nobody is going to tell how to live. I hope he does great fhmgs in the canine world.
