Mr. Daler was playing his players when he decided to take out Miss Brash’s double of the four spade bid. His hand was not very well suited to defensive play and might produce only one defensive winner, the ace of clubs. ‘As it happened, four spades would probably be set a trick. But, even so, Mr. Dale's decision brought him an even better result, because he made the five heart contract.

" 5 ” MRS. KEEN LED the king of spades and Mr. Champion overtook and returned a spade; which Mr. king of hearts was played and Mrs. -Keen won with the ace and led the queen of spades. Now Mr. Dale had lost two tricks. Missing the king, ten, nine and eight of diamonds, there appeared to be a very possible loser in that suit. Un-

Reservations may be made with Mrs. Kivett, less, of course, Mrs. Keen had

the king only once guarded. There was one other possibility for the contract, the development of a squeeze. Mr. Dale figured his chances like this. Mrs. Keen was known to hold the balance of the spades as Mr. Champion had shown out of the suit. She would have to hold one high spade to beat dummy’s nine spot. ’

= = on IF SHE ALSO held the king of diamonds, guarded twice, the king was not in a position to win the second round of the suit, That is, a finesse would give the first round to the

queen and the ace would win |

the second. Therefore, the king was reducéd to a third round winner. So Mrs. Keen would have to hold three diamonds and a spade—four cards in all. Four tricks had already been

played and Mr. Dale could run | five more hearts and the ace of |

clubs—a total of ten. Therefore Mrs. Keen could be reduced to

three cards and the squeeze was on. : 8 =o \ MR. DALE LED all his

trumps, then the ace of clubs. Having to keep a spadé to top dummy’s nine, Mrs. Keene dropped a diamond at trick ten. The diamond finesse followed by the ace of diamonds then killed her king and the jack of diamonds won the last trick.
