Nudist Members Too Raw,

By United Press McKENZIE, Tenn. Sept. 19—

The zoology professor at Bethel College has been fired for belonging to a nudist group, officials of the tiny church school disclosed today.

President Roy N Baker said

Dr. John E. Bauman was dismissed when word leaked out that he was a member of the American Sunbathing Association. " “The philosophy of that organization does. not . fit our church program,” Mr. Baker

said. He said Dr. Bauman’s term at the Cumberland Presbyterian denominational school expired Aug. 18. : Dr. Baunian, 59-vear-old-bach-elor, appealed after receiving notice of his dismissal last spring, Mr. Baker said, and the dismissal was upheld by the church's general assembly education committee. Fey While Mr. Baker denied any such argument. was used, Dr. Bauman said the committee used arguments that were historically untrue to denounce his views about associating with the ppposite sex in the raw. Dr. Bauman, who said he has been a member of the nudist group for 10 years, declared that going nude at camps removes a lot of temptations that confront bedraped persons in the outside world. Dr. Bauman said he did not know how officials found out and Mr. Baker refused to say. He said, however that so far as he knew Dr. Bauman did not permit his private beliefs to influence his teaching. Bethel College, a landmark of this small west Tennessee community, now has about 450 students and 24 teachers.
