= oosierland Grows Geologists on Plot in Montana

Special to The Times JEFFERSON ISLAND, Mont, Sept. 14—There's highly productive Hoosier land in Montana. It produces geologists for Indiana University. This year it turned out a third crop—45 geologists. These 60 acres in the rugged Tobacco Root Mountains of western Montana were bought by In-’ diana University for $5 an acre in 1948. Tt took a special act of the Montana Legislature to do it. Each vear about 40 students in geology care sslected by IU to come’ here for two months of training. Prof. Charles F. Deiss, head of the geology department; and Indiana state geologist, said the students ‘trained here are much -sought by oil, coal and other industries who rely on geologists, Prof. Deiss left Montana State University to join the IU faculty in 1945. The camp is his dream come true Students live 1!; miles above sea level in a setting of rushing mountain streams, meadows of

wild flowers and abandoned mines. It's cool up there. There are

‘snow drifts e even in July.
