Six Scientists
20 Writers
By PAUL F. ELLIS United Press Solence Editor NEW. YORK, Sept. 14—S8ix
Nobel prize winners were “cap-
tured” and put into one hotell |
room yesterday.
| It was an unprecedented occasion in science. | The scientists, along with Dr.| James Bryant Conant, president of Harvard University, surren-| dered to some 20 science writers| and participated in a press con-| ference. | The scientists talked of birth| control, how the world can feed| itgelf, utilizing the sea for food,| possibility of a cancer cure, new| sources of energy, and the aging population problem as man’s life continues to lengthen. | Here were the experts, repre-| senting some of the biggest scien-| tific minds in the world: | Dr. Weldell M.- Stanley, of the University of California, Nobel prize winner in 1946 for his pioneering work in virus research.
|
Wins Chemistry Prize\
Dr. Peter Debye, native of The|
Netherlands, but now an Amer-| ican citizen. He won his Nobel] prize in chemistry in 1936. | Dr. Adolf Butenandt, of Ger-| many. He won his Nobel prize in| chemistry in 1939, but Hitler made him decline the award. Dr. Arne Tiselius, of Sweden.| He won his Nobel prize in chemis-| try in 1948. | Sir Robert Robinson, of Eng-| land. Sir Robert got his Nobel prize in chemistry, in 1947. | Dr. Artturi Virtanen, of Fin-| land. He won his Nobel prize in| agricultural bio - chemistry in 1945. All the scientists were here to! attend the International Meeting, of Chemists. { The first question popped was| about birth control, and whether| the scientists knew of any sub-|
stance that could be taken in the
diet to cut down fertility. . | Mr. Butenandt: He knew of no such research work going on, but) said there were quite a few spermicidal agents.
& Magic a Secret |
Mr. Conant: A magician is never asked to explain his magic. He .was referring to his predictions of last week when he forecast that by the year 2000 there would be world-wide birth control with anti-fertility substances
x Another question was: “What| chemicals could be produced to help maintain peace?” Sir Robert: He believes that if a way could be found to make a better distribution of food that a contribution to peace would have been made. Another question: What can science do to man chemically to make him a more peaceful creature? Sir Robert: He knows of no biological process that can do that to man. Mr. Butenandt: He thinks it might be dangerous to change man’s chemical makeup; that the result might be worse than it is
