‘Radar Makes Unerring ‘Eye” For Defense
By MAX B. COOK Scripps-Howard Aviation Editor
Radar, now highly developed for use in aircraft and on the ground, has become one of the most vital defense devices ever produced. It provides the “eyes” ‘to warn of enemy aerial attacks, for the jet interceptor to locate its target, for the bomber to “see” approaching enemy fighters, for] ground crews to “talk down” air-| craft during bad weather and “talk. up” interceptors and guide them to within their own radar range of enemy bombers, And it enables crews of ground specialists to track supersonic-speed air-| craft and rockets on high alti-| tude and speed test flights. i “Talking up” interceptors has hecome an around-the-clock duty of Ground Control Intercept (GCI) stations operated by the Far Fast Air Force's 314th Divi-| sion in defending Japan. |
Identification—Or Else
Pilots flying any kind of plane now undergo ‘interception experi-| ence when they enter Japan. Be- | fore many are aware of it, a flight of Douglas F-94 jet interceptors is buzzing around them, demanding identification—or else. - Stationed throughout Japan, the GCI stations pick up tiny signals whénever an aircraft flies within range. Heavily armed § F-94's. are dispatched skyward. Following the “strange” aircraft and interceptors on a radar scope, the GCI crewmen “talk” the F-94s into the correct area. There radar

up. Chances of enemy bombers making a surprise attack are being reduced in this manner. Radar also is playing an important part in the Air Force's gruelling operations around the North Pole and in Alaska. The 500th flight over the North Pole has been completed by the 58th Strategic Weather Reconnaissance Squadron and the Air] Force, in emergency, could send its ‘mombers over the Pole as routine flights.
Slow Pass At 500 MPH
» North Pole flying no longer is difficult. One great aid has been the development of the Sky Compass, an ingenious device which enables the navigator to take a bearing on the polarized rays of the sun after it has sunk below the horizon. Twilight flying formerly was hazardous. When the Boeing B-29 all-weather bombers. return to Eielson Air Force Base, Alaska, in bad weather, GCA (Ground Controlled Approach—Radar) brings them down safely. : At the Air Force Flight Test Center at Muroec, Calif,, recently, a bat-like object made a barreling approach, tracked by radar. “It made a slow pass—at perhaps 500 miles an hour,” said a Douglas representative. “Slow” interrupted a crewman, “What's ‘ fast with that flying bat?” It was the Navy's latest secret carrier-based high-speed interceptor, soon to go into mass production. Known as the Douglas F4D Skyray, its top speed is se-| cret, but it is maneuverable and can climb straight up at terrific speed. Its wings form a triangle, with the point at the nose.
