~_ Hostile occupation of Iran,|] itself relatively valueless as a

source of manpower or material, also would sever or threaten

world airways through the Med-| }

fterranean area and along the southern rim of Asia. « World War II proved the great feasibility of trans-Iranian supply movements by road and rallway through considerable mountainous and desert ¢Suntry, between the Persian Gulf and the Volga basin. The route, however, was free of attack, save at the Russian end. Even- if Iranian oilfields and the Abadan refinery fell intact into Russian hands—an unlikely prospect save by peaceful conquest—Russia could profit little from them immediately.

Valuable as Base

They would, however, be part of an enviabld, base of strategic world power ahd economic control after Communist victory. Iran's and other Middle East oil reserves comprise nearly half the world's known treasure of petroleum. .

In wartime, overland transportation of oil northward to Russia would deliver only a relative trickle if any. Experts doubt that even in the long run it would be

ward across the Iranian plateau and mountain ranges to the Casplan or through the Caucasus to Russia.

Prefabrication of submarines and their overland movement, broken down, from north to south, is something else.

So would be the whole problem of maintaining Russian forces in Iranian bases. Lines of communication studied and developed during the last war could be turned about and worked in “the opposite direction for Russia. Even a vast heritage of permanent construction along the. former Russiad supply line in Iran

could be put to use in a simple reversal of its direction.

West Would Lose Oil

Military strategy not only calls for capture of enemy potential and position but also for denial it to the foe. Iranian oil automatically be denied to the west if Iran goes Communist, even without armed Russian attack.

Given a sound economy and a

Soviets would think twice before forcefully trying to make this country a prewar military base. A forceful Russian move almost certainly would precipitate armed reaction from the West,
