Player Stumbles Into a Winning Squeeze
Some squeezes are almost automatic as witness this hand which Mr. Muzzy played at a grand slam in spades. When Mr. Muzzy heard his partner's jump raise he took another look at his terrific hand and decided he probably had about 16 winners. After checking to find his partner had the missing ace, he had no hesitancy in bidding seven. " EJ 8 MR. ABEL OPENED the jack of clubs and Mr. Muzzy's face fell when he saw the dummy. Obviously he had only 12 sure winners. Shaking his head sadly, he won the first trick with the queen of clubs and laid down two top trumps to make sure they were all out.
Next he cashed his two remaining top clubs. At this point he thought of throwing the “hand. in for down one. Luckily he discarded that idea and ran the rest of his spades. On the last two spades he had to make two discards from dummy.
His hand went waveringly toward the 10 of hearts and Miss Brash closed her eyes as if she couldn’t bear to watch. She ‘realized the 10 of hearts might be an important squeeze
because he knew those were the right plays but only because they were the lowest cards in dummy. Mr. Champion’s blood pressure had been rising all through the play. He realized, if Mr: Muzzy didn’t, that a squeeze was almost bound to develop. On the lead of the last spade, Mr. Champion had to get down to four cards. It was clear that three of these had to be hearts or else dummy’s ten of hearts would be a winner,

‘The only hope was that Mr. Abel had the guarded jack of~diamonds, so Mr. Champion threw the queen of that suit. Mr. Muzzy then played the ace of diamonds, dropping the king. His jack of diamonds and the two high hearts won the balance of the tricks. “Your luck is revolting,” said Mr. Champion, disgustedly. “What do you mean, luck?” answered Mr, Muzzy, angrily. “I knew I had you in an endplay all the time.”
