Red Cross Sends ‘SOS’ For Workers

ANTED—civilian help. This appeal comes from the Indianapolis Red

Cross ‘Chapter. The chap-

ter is sending an SOS for more Home Nursing and First Aid instructors so the City of Indianapolis ship won't sink under the accelerated training program allied with Marion County Civil Défense preparedness. Awareness and instruction of the public helps assure adequate home front defense. Training given in Red Cross classes which prepares persons to give emergency care before the arrival of a doctor and to assist in emergency ald stations will play an important part in the event of an atomic raid.

»

5 ou MN MORE THAN 1000 PERSONS received Red Cross Home Nursing instruction during the past vear.. This included the special training on care of atomic bombing victims. The First Aid department issued more than 4500 certificates. But in an area as large and as heavily populated as Marion County this handful of trained people could do little to care for an estimated 60,000 injured

victims should an atom bomb .

strike. A total of 64 hours of free training prepares a person in the techniques of instructing First Aid. Class work includes 22 hours of standard training, 12 hours of advanced work and 30 additional hours preparation for instructorship.

= n o HOME NURSING train{ng courses for instructors consists of 30 hours classroom instruction and 14 hours practice teaching. 1? Student and graduate nurses, teachers and youth group leaders are preferred applicants for Home Nursing teacher training. About 500 Home Care of the Sick certificates holders were registered in the past year with thegindianapolis Medical Society to assist doctors and trained nurses in various sectors of the county in case of an enemy attack. Several First Aid in‘structor volunteers participated in the emergency Medical Rescue Division of the Civil Defense program learning rescue techniques to be used in times of disaster. More volunteer instructors ‘teaching Red Cross training classes means more Marion County residents will be able to enroll for the type of instruction which will prepare them for emergency action if disaster strikes. . And preparedness will go far in averting panic and confusion should the time come when Home Nursing and First Aid techniques must be used.

End Guess Work

In French Fries Many women hesitate to serve French fried foods because they aren't sure how to tell when the fat reaches the right temperature for immersing the potatoes, or shrimp or other foods. The surest check is a reliable deep-fat fry thermometer. One now available at housewares counters is distinguished by its dial face and a clip which enables you to fasten it to the side of the frying basket to keep it steady and easy to read. It has a stainless steel case around the clock-like face, and for candy-making.

Avoid Hurry-Up Job of Gardening

Do prepare the bed just as deep down as your back wil allow. (Perennials stay put for quite a while and you want root development to support that rich top-growth you're hoping for.) Don't do a hurry-up job of shallow soil preparation and
