of Music with Butler Uni torium closer. This is pure guess work and not to'be taken as prophecy.

But with administrative channels between the two institutions

now cleared, the should be open for planning a building that ean greatly benefit bath Jordan College and the university as a whole, besides serving important community needs. From this column, it looks as if the principal problem is financial. Since there have been off-the-record ~ intimations that financial arrangements may prove easier than had been thought, it's fair to assume the whole problem

way

now

ig closer to solution than ever before. o o o \ FORTUNATELY for all con-

. ¢érned, we have two admirable

patterns ‘here in Indiana to consult and partly follow: Indiana University and Purdue. The IU auditorium and Purdue's Hall of Music both serve their respective communities as well as their campus population. They extend to the community at large the cultural resources of our present world, and do so in palatable, nonacademic fashion. They give Bloomington and Lafayette citizens opportuinties to see and hear attractions that could not otherwise be brought

in. Thus they serve almost as a department of university extengion.

hs z 2 ; THESE TERMS may sound dry, but they're important. The minute we embark on any enter-|

prise that seems to be offering think of how this dream auditor-|

competition with existing private! enterprise, we need to justify in| words the new venture. Criticism has been levelled at IU and Pur-|

road shows and thereby competing with private impresarios. The problem is not easy to analyze. Commercial management, which lacks a large student-sub-scription season-ticket audience, cannot always afford the risk of

it should be possible to define the functions of a new auditorium in such a manner as to avoid injuring private enterprise. 5 n o THAT LAST phrase is close to the heart of the entire high-class entertainment problem. Private enterprise does not and cannot sustain a major symphony orchestra or opera company. Since our American credo officially rejects subsidies, we have to invent ways and means of paying for opera and symphony, just as we do for the other arts. As I wrote in these pages a couple of years ago, Virgil Thomson, the New York Herald Tribune music critic then visiting the IU School of Music, proposed a tieup between music and education 80 as to by-pass the “road closed” sign on Subsidy Ave. You can get money for education easier than for music, Mr. Thomsen pointed |

LET'S SUPPOSE we could

really plan that audiforium for the Fairview campus. I have a site in mind, where the lay of

the land should make an adjacent outdoor theater easy to construct. That, incidentally, would solve once and for all the rain-out problem of Starlight Musicals, since any show could be brought indoors, if only with lighting and very sketchy scenery, at the last moment.) * 2 Class, practice and rehearsal rooms for Jordan, plus a little theater for Butler dramatics and small-scale Jordan operas, could be incorporated-into-the building. And the building could offer a permanent home for the Indian-
