Child's Room

A child's room should double as play space, as well as sleeping quarters. To make it serve all purposes, first give it a wall finish that cleans easily with a damp cloth, Gloss or enamel, not flat

its greater washability.

Flooring shouldd resist rough usage and stains, should be easy to clean, quiet and safe underfoot, and add interest.

Furniture in the child's room should be comfortable, safe and resistant to hard knocks. Colorful plastic upholstery wears well and is easy to clean. Cupboards with shelves and sliding doors will instill neat, orderly habits. These should be firmly attached to wall or floor so they cannot be pulled over. .

Room Grows With Child

Cupboards should be 12" deep or more for maximum toy storage. Three feet is a good height.| {The cupboard tops provide space for display of prized .possessions. All shelves and other facilities a pre-school child uses should be| kept within a 36” height so he need not climb up to reach any object. Hanger rods in clothes closets can be raised gradually as he grows up. When fitting out a nursery, select furnishings that will have permanent usefulness, such as unpainted chests. or drawers which can be finished in a pastel color. When the child passes babyhood, the enamel or paint can pe removed and the pieces refinished with wood stain, such as maple, or with enamel in colors more suitable for an older child. If more than one child occupies the room, double-deck bunk beds save space which can be devoted to the play area. Show cut-out pictures of momentary| interest on door panels; affix the| cut-outs with rubber cement. or scotch tape for easy - removal when interest wanes. |Avoid Pink and Blue Since all children are possessive by nature, treat the child’s room as his very own Property. Do not use it for general ho hold storage. Consult the child

when planning colors for his

room,

Even when a room is used as

a nursery, the modern trend is to avoid over-doing ' traditional pink and: blue. Instead, use yellow, dusty green; rose, Warm gray or other interesting colors accented with strong contrasting ones, A boy's room should have an air of masculine ruggedness, with a theme suggested by the youngster's own. special interests, such as aviation, nautical, military, sports.

Shopping Habits Change Refrigerators The design of a kitchen and the appliances in it have been greatly affected by the shopping and cooking habits of today’s” fami-

lies. John K. Knighton, general sales manager of Servel, Inc., reports that four important changes have been brought about in his company's new gas and electric refrigerators. “Since most families prefer to shop only once a week, the new refrigerators have larger food storage space,” he points out. “This has been accomplished, however, without enlarging the external dimensions of the models.” . He notes, too, that freezer compartments are now bigger than before, since families are showing an increased interest in the use of frozen foods. Third, Knighton says, the interiors have been made more

adaptable to various kinds of loading encountered in the course of a week's meal preparation.|

Shelves must be adjustable to,

permit arrangements of bulky, roasts or poultry and tall bottles,

in quantity.

“Finally,” he observes, “several innovations _ in - equipment have resulted from new family habits! The newest is an odds and ends basket to hold small jars and] packages which usually clutter up a refrigerator.”
