The federation is in session this week in Evanston, Ill.

Top ranking Methodists also urged the federation members not to re-elect the present executive secretary of the organization, the Rev. Jack R. McMichael, at the current meeting, It began Tuesday and will close Friday.

The Methodist Federation for

Social Action operates entirely outside the jurisdiction and au- tion.

thority of the Methodist Church. |

But the federatipn membership| been ‘radical’ ‘if by ‘radical’ we is made up of Methodist laymen |mean urging the adoption of so-

and ministers. Thus it is seen| why the word, “Methodist,” is in-! cluded in its name. I interviewed various wellknown Methodists to find out just how they feel about this federation which has. stirred up so much adverse public comment. Although I have been the church editor of The Indianapolis Times for many years, I dort re-

call hearing very much about the |

M.F.8.A. before 1947. At that time, Frederick Woltman, a Scripps- Howard staff writer, reported at the Kansas City, Mo., convention of the M.F.8.A. among other things that the “prestige of the Methodist Church was being used by the Rev. . McMichael as a sounding board for the Gospel of communism.”

Divided Into 2 Camps

Persons belonging to the federation seem to be divided into

’> two camps. On the one hand * stand those who steadfastly have

remained within the MFSA. They

say they believe the way to clean

up an organization is to stay inside and throw all your influence toward the better principles in which you believe.

On the other side, are those

who have withdrawn from the organization refusing to give it active support of any kind. . All the celebrities with whom 1 talked on this matter, without

exception, proised the federation They |

for past accomplishment said the Church needs an outside, or unofficial social action group. They all seemed to feel that such a group serves as a safety valve of discussion; that it clarifies certain social issues; that it starts the “ball rolling”

for solution of crushing problems

\ of today’s world.
