‘HOLLYWOOD, Sept. 1-—Like everyone else I'm convinced television has unlimited possibilites. one else, I suppose, I have ‘a grievance concerning TV.. I'm looking for the guy who introduced westerns to television.
My grievance is based upon the! fact these western pictures on TV have been creating chaos in my home life for the -past several vears. My wife, Eleanor Powell, and I have a son, ‘Peter, a friendly. likeable 6-year-old, Until this character who merged TV and western pictures came on the scene, Peter and I had a good, ~Rormal - father-and-son relations ship. 8 ” is AND I WAS doing very fine un.il we got ourselves a television set. That did it. I found myself competing with all these western stars for prestige In my son's eves, . The pictures I've been making have rarely been of the ‘western’ type, lately. The fact. Michigan Fair Survives (Bob) Hopeless Day
DETROIT, Sept. 1 (UP) Most of the food and frolic' planned for the Michigan state fair was back on the midway today after opening-day patrons were forced to go hungry and miss comedian Bob Hope's show because of a union dispiite.
But ginger ale was banished from the fairgrounds and at least one gambling concession
was closed. Hope had to settle for a ham sandwich yesterday when a dispute between the AFI. and CIO unions ‘shut off the food supply at the grand Speniog. Michigan Gov. Gr Mennen Williams and bith Marilyn Maxwell, Hope's costar, also munched sandwiches instead of enjoying a planned luncheon.
| # » =
THE FAIR BOARD'S troubles started when the unions quarreled ower which one had the right to place girls in the Vernor ginger ale booths. When the CIO ‘refu€ed to budge, the AFL pulled out all its fairground workers and threw up a picket line. AFI, ‘ticket takers left their posts at the main entrance and thousands of persons . s{reamed
