Regains Jet Speed Record for U. S.

By MAX COOK Scripps-Howard Staff Writer

DETROIT, ‘Aug. 20-— A slim, calm West Point graduate, father of five children, today held the world jet plane speed record for a 100-kilometer closed course. He established two records within three days and brought the speed title, held by Britain since 1948, to the United States. Air Force Col. Fred J. Ascani,

North American Sabre jet fighter around six pylons spaced 10 miles apart, at the National Air Races here, at 628.698 miles per hour yesterday, bettering .the British record of 605.230 miles per hour established by a De Havilland jet piloted by John Douglas Derry, Apr. 12, 1948, 635.41 mph. Then it developed that the colonel earlier had attained an official ¥en of 635.41 miles per hour oveér the same course but the Air Force had kept back the news just in case bad weather caused the Sunday flight to be canceled, Col. Ascani flew at about 1200! feet, holding the flashing jet in! a circular course almost in a continual bank. The flight thrilled more than 100,000 spectators who packed the stands in Detroit's first National Air Race. The colonel has a World War II combat record of 12 months in Europe. He now directs experimental flight testing and engineering, as deputy to the commander) of the Air Force flight test cen-| ter at Muroe, Cal. He was graduated from West Point in 1941. The Sabre used by Col. Ascani is of the same type as those which hold numerous victories inj Korea over the fast Russian] MIG-15 jet fighters. Roads Geared to Hum

At Careless Drivers

CHICAGO, Aug. 20 (UP): — Streets and highways that’ protest out loud when drivers go on the wrong side of the road are being adopted in many places throughout the nation, the Ametican Public Works Association says. The warning device is a 24-inch wide concrete separator with a scored surface, placed flat between the traffic lanes. It emits a loud hum when tires run over it and thus wans careless drivers to get back in the right lane. First used exeperimentally in New Jersey, it now is being installed in the reconstructed sixlane New London turnpike in Cranston, R. I, the association said.
