‘I Am Absolutely Innocent’ —

Icardi Prefers Trial by Army

Rather Than Go Back to Italy

By ALDO ICARDI

As told to the United P Pittsburgh Press. a Soros Howard? Newspaper

PITTSBURGH, Aug. 18— These charges. that I plotted the death of my commanding officer, Maj. Willam V. Holohan, In

Italy during Warld War II, are §

absurd, viclous and completely

untrue. I never thought that this could

happen in America, especially to

anyone who served his country as an espionage agent. I have been tried by a magazine, radio and press—dontrary to every concept of due process of law and freedom that we have fought with blood to preserve. I am absolutely innocent. has gone off half-cocked with ridiculous statements instead of checking the records. Even the Defense Department I would accept trial by, jury at the drop of a hat. Enemies of this country are trying to extradite me to Italy where I wouldn't stand a chance of a fair trial.

Certain Suicide

This would be certain suicide because of the nature of the work I did during the war,

Rather than be extradited, I Lodolce

would be willing to re-enter the Army and face a military court.

I want a|

to decide who would shoot the major after his soup allegedly was poisoned.

There was no $100,000" in gold, or fights over helping Communists, as: charged. The whole magazine story was a fabrication. I am the victim of enemies in Italy who are striking back at me because they did not under-

lwere

stand the work we were doing} or were disgruntled in failing t get arms we were unable to Sup-| ply. I have been caught in the cross currents of Italian politics.

These enemies are trying to Shanghai me into standing trial in a country where I served as a spy for the Allies. The charges are old. They were exploded as false long ago. I willingly submitted to a liedetector test in 1947 at the South Park (Pittsburgh) Army Post and was informed by interrogators that I was completely exonerated. Italian newspapers have headlined the story for a year or more, protected by weak laws. Nature of Job

As an espionage agent, attached to the Secret. Intelligence (SI) branch of OSS, I was responsible for much damage to

property in industrial areas and

other military targets. These included such vital things as airfields, supply lines, communications, railroads, highways and bridges. German and Italian personnel killed. Unfortunately, Italian civilians also were killed by Allied bombings which I directed to these areas. Animosities were created against me by people who suppossedly were sympathetic wherever my judgement did not coincide with their political beliefs, interests or desires. Sgt. Lodolce’'s alleged confession, involving me, is completely unfounded in fact and his repudiation of it proves this point.

Police held Nathaniel Tooley Jr., 24, Oakland City, on an dpen charge pending an inquest tomorrow. Mr. Bruner described his assailant before his death, and police found Tooley hiding in a field near the shooting scene.

The Bruners were fishing in the private lake when they heard
