AUG. 19, 1951
Courts Bar Association announced today that it has asked President Truman to assure the 80 ousted West Point cadets that their discharge is not final and will’ be reviewed impartially in ‘Washington. Robert Daru, general counsel of the association's committee on justice, said’ the association] wants to make sure that the 90 alleged cribbers have not been frrevocably dismissed on the! basis of the judgments of review boards at West Point and will be afforded further consideration. The men were ousted because they participated in a cheating system under which information on examinations was passed on by men who had taken them to cadets in later quiz sections at the academy. { Mr, Daru said he has received {a report from Franklin F. Russell, Washington lawyer and spe|eial counsel in the association's {investigation, that several genlerals reported that under the | usual procedure, the cases of the {cadets must be reviewed by the Secretary of the Army, the Secretary of Defense and President Truman. ! Under this system, Mr. Daru said, it is presumed that either of these three men could reverse, modify or uphold the decisions reached by the review boards at West Point.
