yearn ior jobs while hundreds of hearty workers yawn for summer vacations. :
More donationg of forgotten furniture, “outgrown” toys and moth-beckoning old clething would put the 250 to work, Goodwill Industries, Inc. say.
The industry is 90 per cent supported by sales from repaired and refinished items donated by Indianapolis and Marion County citizens. Indianapolis Community Chest, gifts and membership assist in financing.
Eager to be self-supporting, 115 FE
handicapped persons now work regularly at Goodwill’s five retail stores here’
Persons with severe handicaps, seven currently, are picked up on workdays int a Goodwill station wagon, - One crippled woman ~aits for her ride, going down steps » her house by using a ramp. Workers Are Cheerful
Goodwlill's staff is a lighthearted group, members pitying only persons “who pity themselves.” There is social life. Often there are romances, a re-

two deaf mutes in Goodwill Chapel. Friday marked payment of the millionth dollar in salaries at the local industry organized about 17 years ago in a small garage. Internationally, now with 108 units, it was founded by a Methodist minister who solicited contributions for the handicapped
to work on and sell by canvassing
Boston with a gunny sack on his back. o Two-Fold Purpose
Goodwill’s purpose is two-fold ~-to hire handicapped and to train them for better jobs in cooperation with the State Vocational Rehabilitation Sefice of the State Department of Public Instruction. Expanded this year was the furniture refinishing and custom upholstering departments. Added also was a labor pool of 400 workers to-do detailed ‘nuisance’ jobs cluttering operations of busy industries and offices. Spring housecleaning time is the occasion of Goodwill’s biggest drive. Last spring 300,000 items were sold from repaired donations. Boy and Girl Scouts and Campfire Girls help canvass the city and outlying areas with the plea: “If you ‘don’t wear it or use it, give it to Goodwill.” But every day is pickup day if you pick up the Phohe and call Goodwill,
