Ban Canty Pop | Sales to Pupils, PTA Advocates
By ARTHUR J. SNIDER | CHICAGO Aug. 16 (CDN)— Sale of candy and pop in the nation’s schools should be! banned, the National Congress of | Parents and Teachers urges. | In a statement issued from| headquarters here, the Congress said these sweets interfere with a good diet and the promotion of sound food habits. Sale is permitted in the Chicago high school lunch room! canteens. Elementary school children can buy candy only. “We have given the problem much thought and have concluded “it would not be wisevto outlaw candy and carbonated beverages entirely,’ Maid Edward F. Galdzik, assistant director of the bureau of lunch rooms. “If the children that want them cannot buy them at the school, they will go to the corner store,” By keeping them in the lunch room, these students can be influenced by the food habits of the!
90 per cent who eat a balanted
diet, he added. * The council on foods and nutri= tion of the American Medical Association also has urged aboli-| tion of soda pop and candy sales in schools. | It also has recommended a zone around school building in which the sale would be pro-! hibited,
