If Tipsy Driver Took B-1 He Might Not Be One

Science was a bit too late to spare a local man the suffering and embarrassment of a fine and

Jail sentence.

It hasn't been proved positively yet, but if Louis Dean Harless,| 21, Seymour, had taken a large!

kicker of vitamin B-1 (thiamine) his body might have assimilated the alcohol in his system faster.

And he might not have been be-.

fore Judge Alex Clark in Municipal Court 4 yesterday on charges of drunkenness, drunk driving and reckless driving.

Drs. H. R. Hulpieu and Versa

V. Cole of the Indiana University Medical Center staff announced today that according to their research findings there may be a direct connection between the in-

take of alcohol and thiamine in

the human body. | The doctors believe that a person's susceptibility to alcohol de-! creases as the amount of thiamine in the body increases. The doctors | have been working on animals. | On this premise, Harless’ thia- | mine content must have hit the skids. In court, he denied he was drunk. He said his poor health would not permit him to drink, but that he had taken a bottle of Hadacol shortly before his arrest. ;

= ” » JUDGE CLARK ‘didn't take Harless' thiamine content into consideration, but did accept the reading of a drunkometer test which showed a score of .159 for Harless. A reading of .150 is cohsidered drunk. The judge did assure Harless he'd have at least 10 days to recoup his thiamine content without interference of alcohol. Harless is scheduled for that time In jail. The judge also fined him $43.25 and costs.
