The night before the final game Lewis tells Martin he is going to announce his engagement to Miss Marshall. Martin and Miss Marshall are really in love, but Lewis doesn't realize it. Martin believes he has been jilted. He gets drunk and makes a scene in her dormitory. He is expelled from school. Ridgeville is trailing with five minutes to go, when the coach sends Lewis into the game out of desperation.
