: By United Press GARY, Ind, Aug. 8 — John Knowles, 17, of Chicago, has written another “confession” of the slaying of Miss Mary Cheever, Gary school teacher, and Probation Officer Nathan Glover said today he is “convinced” the statement is accurate. Mr. Glover said Knowles wrote the new statement last night giving what he described as det”ls of the fatal shooting of the teacher in a Gary alley Mar. 3, 1949, « Chicago police said today three Chicago youths implicated by Knowles in an earlier statement were cleared by a lie detector test. Two of them, Edward Hooks, 21, and Jesse Smith,-17, were to appear in Chicago Boys’ Court today on disorderly conduct, police said. The third, Robert Douglas, 17, is being held on a burglary charge. All three were with Knowles at the Illinois State Training School for Boys near St. Charles, Knowles will be turned over {o Gary police as soon as a charge is placed against him, Mr. Glover said. The youth was held at Lake County jail at Crown Point under jurisdiction of the juvenile court. In his latest statement Knowles told the probation officer he shot the school teacher when she resisted his attempts to steal her purse. He then rode a bicycle to Phoenix, 1ll., where he burned the purse and threw his pistol into a chicken house, the statement said.
