Art Cross of Morristown, N. had his: second 100-lap LB ‘AAA feature at the W. 16th St, Midget Speedway to talk about today. He won the event last night before a crowd of 7000. - It was no easy win for Cross. He had to outlast Troy Ruttman, Ontario, Cal, who was a threat until the 83d lap when a blowout forced him out. Ruttman picked up $730 in lap money, having .ed from the 11th lap until his mishap. As soon as Ruttman went out, Cross took over. He came from 18th place, grabbed the lead and beat out George Tichenor, Logansport, by nearly half a lap. The time was 28:2692, Third was Johnny Tolan, Denver, and fourth Roy Newman, Gary. Winners of heats were Paul (Potsy) Goacher, Anderson; Tichenor, Bill Vukovich and

Chuck Stevenson, Cross had won the first 100-

Forward Toward Peace Mr. Truman said the “howls about bankruptcy are old

stuff” and come from the same people who argued in the past that the nation could not afford social security, unemployment. compensation, ‘aid to agriculture, and huge public power projects like TVA, Grand Coulee dam and rural electrification.

“We can well afford to pay the price of peace,” the

President said. “Our only alternative is to pay the terrible cost of war.” ‘ :

Mr. Truman said the “doubters and defeatists” also

are “trying to stir up trouble and suspicion between the people and their government.”

“They are using the smear and the big lie for personal publicity and partisan advantage, heedless of the damage they do to the country. Never, not even in the bitterest political campaigns, have 1 seen such a flood of lies and slander as is mow pouring forth over the country.” “Don’t let yourselves be confused by the smearers and \slanderers,” Mr. Truman said. “There are three things T nt you to remember: “First, this country is on the right track in foreign We have a goal—and that is peace.
