Love-Making Desperado Packs Load of Laughs

By RAY WEBSTER Jr. United Press Staff Correspondents: :

EAST ST. LOUIS, II, July 27—1f the antics of Ollie Gene Embry run true to form, the ®

SGT. RODRIGUEZ AND Miller fell over each other to put through emergency calls to police in St. Louis, where Embry and Kane could be found. Kane

It was Sgt. Rodriguez’ and T+Miller's turn to ask questions. “What bank?” They wanted to know,

latest addition to the

laughs. Detective Sgts. Joseph Rod-

| was arrested a few hours later in a hotel lobby, but Embry got

riguez and Adolph Miller today |

related the inside story of the |

downfall of Embry’s gang after

they committed a $9000 hank |

robery which was solved ina few hours—by accident.

The 22-year-old Embry, also |

known as Gene Craig, is still on the loose, thanks to some fancy footwork when police closed in on him, but his three cohorts are doing long federal penitentiaries. Sgts. ean claim without fear of contradiction that they solved the robbery cf the Monroe National Bank at Columbia, Ill., last Feb. 6 without help from the scores of fellow officers assigned to the case. ” ” ”

THE REASON is simply that neither of the East St. Louis detectives even knew the bank had been robbed when they “broke” the case. is For months, Sgts. Rodriguez and Miller had been looking for Patrick Kane, an ex-convict, and his friend Embry (or Craig) for questioning in connection with several burglaries.

They finally got a line on the two burglars through 17-year-old Charles Daubach, a kid in trouble with the juvenile authorities who worshiped Kane, Sgts. Rodriguez and Miller made a ‘‘deal” on a petty theft charge and signed him up as their private

stool pigeon—intending for him |

to tip them off when Kane and Embry got within reach. Daubach, however, Kane better than he did the two

cops and soon Sgts. Rodriguez |

and Miller had lost track of

him. It developed that Daubach |

had joined Kane and Embry as junior member of the gang.

= on ” BOTH DETECTIVES were home in bed after a trick on the night shift when a call came to Miller's home, informing him that Daubach was due to appear at a certain location at a certain time.

After a quick call to Sgt. Rodriguez, Sgt. Miller sped to his fellow policeman’s home in

his own car and within mintites

they were parked at the desig-

nated spot awaiting Daubach’s

arrival. The youth finally showed up and the detectives nabbed him. In his pockets were a gun and enough money to choke a horse. They hustled him off to headquarters bent on reprimanding the youngster for running out on them. There a detective who had been working all day asked Daubach, more in the line of conversation than anything else: “Did you rob that bank?” Daubach answered meekly, "Yes."

‘Voice’ Placed On Escalator

For Customers

WASHINGTON, July 27 — The department store moving-stair-way, or escalator as it is called, will be able to “talk”

the 837 awards of the week. The device is a series of loudspeakers in the stationary side walls of the escalator which will repeat over and over again the goods the customer will find on the floor being approached. The story it will tell is similar to the familiar one now repeated by ele-| vator operators.

THE MESSAGE will be of such

length that the complete story is

told in the time required for the passenger to be raised from floor The voice will be loud
