Like the hand of the magician, lightning is quicker than the eve, So says Julius H, Hagenguth, director of the General Electric High Voltage Laboratory at Pittsfield, Mass.

saw a bolt of lightning strike the
earth, Mr. Hagenguth assures you that you didn’t. ; What you actually saw was a
flash traveling from the earth up into the sky toward the clouds at a rate of about 18,000 miles a second. The prelude to’ a stroke is the creation of two electric charges, one on the clouds, the othér on the ground.
