Like the hand of the magician, lightning is quicker than the eve, So says Julius H, Hagenguth, director of the General Electric High Voltage Laboratory at Pittsfield, Mass.

saw a bolt of lightning strike the

earth, Mr. Hagenguth assures you that you didn’t. ; What you actually saw was a

flash traveling from the earth up into the sky toward the clouds at a rate of about 18,000 miles a second. The prelude to’ a stroke is the creation of two electric charges, one on the clouds, the othér on the ground. The stroke begins with the passage of a “leader,” a tiny trickle of lightning, invisible to the naked reve, which travels from, the cloud to the ground When the leader contacts the ground, the brilliant portion of the lightning flash which we see,
