2 Men Arrested After Wild Chase
Through Streets
A wild chase through city
streets early Sunday morning
ended in the arrest of a 27-year-old Indianapolis man and a 17-
{year-old youth who came here a
few days ago from Kentucky, Policeman Pat Stratton was on his way home from work when a car pulled up a little too close
for comfort as he waited for an!
automatic signal at Rural and New York Sts. to change. The vehicle took off at a high
irate of speed, and the chase was
on. The driver of the car failed to heed the officer's warning shots as he led a zig-zag course at a high rate of speed without stopping for automatic signals. Arrested when trapped in the Highland Ave. streetcar barn were Ben Pratt, 27, of 229 N. Davidson, a passenger in the vehicle, and a 17-year-old Kentucky youth living at that address. Pratt was charged with city vagrancy and drunkeness, and the younger man with reckless driv-
“.|ing; disobeying automatic signals,
and delinquency.

But here in his home city—famous for its shipyards, soup cannery, and electrical appliance factory--the champion is revered as a beloved “mystery man.” Practically any resident of Camden will smile knowingly and lift an eyebrow when “37” is men tioned in connection with Walcott's age. No one here knows exactly how old he is, but anyone can tell you his age must be in the range between 42 and 47. No, the informant cannot prove it himself, but he knows a “certain party” who can--a party who somehow ‘never can be located. But what about the birth certificate possessed by Manager Felix Bocchicchio?
» = ~ THE CERTIFICATE states that Arnold Raymond Cream, as Walcott was baptized, was born at nearby Merchantville, N, J., on Jan. 81, 1914. If it be true, the Champ is 37. But apparently no one outside Walcott’s family and entourage believes the certificate genuine. “Anyone can fix up a birth certificate,” they say. Similarly the emphasis that

that his title victory will “bring about a “second honeymoon” for|
fit of their six children. The degree of coolness that existed between Joe and Lydia before he went to McKeesport, Pa., to train for the Pittsburgh fight with Charles, ' depends upon each gossip’s alleged information or imagination. All agree, however, that the pictures of the champ’s family bliss—as painted by admiring sports writers at Pittsburgh were exceedingly rose-tinted. Lydia, an attractive, welldressed, afl well-spoken woman, gave no hint of any rift with Jersey Joe at the Camden Central] Airport Friday while awaiting his arrival by plane from Pittsburgh. = = »

JULY 2, 1951
Sports Writer
~~ CAMDEN, N. J., July 23—Jersey Joe Walcott is regarded by the general public today as a “miracle man” because at the age of 37 he became world heavyweight champion by a sensational upset knockout over Ezzard Charles.
deadly nse of the left hook at Pittsburgh. They know Jersey
Joe has an effective portside wal-
lop, but they recall that he usually depends upon his over-
handed right for flattening op- :
ponents in important seraps. They recall that when the several-times retired odd-jobs and “reliefer” began his rags-to-riches final comeback he floored Joe Louis three times with over-handed rights in their two title fights. * Virtually everyones in Camden knows that Jersey Joe was “#robbed” of the decision in his first bout with Louls at Madison Square Garden, Dee. §, 1947, and virtually everyone expected Joe to take the title the second time because he planned to “cross up” Louis and knock him out with left
hooks, : & : at Grenloch, N. J, for
the second Louis fight on June 25, 1948, Walcott sharpened the left hook in every session. With that port punch he battered his spar-
mates. In the ring with Louis
victory stories placed upon Jer-ithat June night he apparently forgot all about his great left man” evoke brow lifts and light hook. Again he concentrated on laughter. His neighbors are not |over-handed rights, which Louis hesitant in expressing the hope had learned to slip.
» 8 8 WALCOTT DID manage to
. floor Louis once in their second Joe and wife Lydia, for the bene boot with & looping t to the
head, but as a one-fisted fighter Jersey Joe was knocked out in the 11th round.
Moreover, he was ineffective
with left hooks in the first two
title fights with Ezzard Charles;
also in his upset by young Rex
Layne of Utah last November. But at Pittsburgh, he concentrated on left hooks to Charles’ body and head. In the third round, one of those blows staggered Ezzard and cut a gash beneath his right eye. And in the seventh round— boom! Because of his apparently uncertain age, uncertain domestic status and uncertain use of all weapons available in every fight, the new champion is regarded as a mystery man by his many admirers in his home town.
