ted their 215 hours in tinds stage last night.
The opening night of this
Musicals production the question how much of Friml's
operetta should be raised from
the grave, ‘ Raised, that is, without some transfiguration to offset the previous death, : | The music lives fairly well, what there is of it. But the chatter—one Cardinal Richelieu pitching against a whole team of Dodgers — is sometHing else again, After many blunderbusses, the Three Musketeers and D'Artagnan, the Gascon, perform the great mission of crossing the English Channel to purloin from a lady's bosom a jewel belonging to the queen of France. At the moment of purloinment last night, Harold Patrick, as D'Artagnan, threw Doris Patston, as Lady de Winter, ont the light metal bed (hotel style) so violently that the bed ‘almost. slid through the scenery. That's one way of livening up this hybrid operetta, which supposedly is set in 17th Century France. And everybody in the cast used up huge energy trying to give punch, if not meaning, to silly lines full of “Egads” and similar worn-out terms. It's a little hard to realize that P. G. Wodehouse could have had anything to do with the dialog.
Not Season's Best {
By HENRY BUTLER Friml’s Three Musketeers strutted and heavy costumes on the Fair
n's fourth Starlight William Cook does energetically well with the comic role of Planchet. Patti Browne is a most convincing Queen of France, though she has small opportunity to sing her best. Whoever set up the printed program, incidentally, should have done better in assigning the type sizes. Miss Browne certainly deserves “caps.” Edward Green, as the Colonel; 1Richard Winternheimer, who gets a chance to do some nice singing in the Buckingham role (seemed like everybody in this smokehouse item was bucking ham throughout the evening); Charles Aschmann, as the Comte de Rochefort
(somebod back of me sald, “That's - blue cheese, isn’t. it?") again is ‘a first-rate singing
actor; Malcolm Beggs, as King Louis, and James McCaslin, Ken-
