State High Court Eyes Its Blacklog, Including Bell Case
The Indiana Supreme Court began a special conference today to clear up a backlog whic included the Indiana Bell Tele phone Co.'s fight for a mult million dollar rate increase, Justice Paul 8B. Draper said the conference was not called for any special matter but probably would include the Bel! case, It was expected to last several days. : Bell asked the high court éarlier this month for an Immediate decision on whether a temporary writ of prohibition which wiped out an annual rate increase estimated up to almost $7 milli'n should be dissolved or made permanent, The writ was issued against Marion Circuit Judge Lloyd D. Claycombe July 6. He had granted Bell a temporary rate increase when the Indiana Public Service Tommizsion pared Bell's petition for a $84 million annual hike 1own ta £730,000, I" The Supreme Court writ did not deny Bell the increase. It estahlished the PSC as the dominant {agency in determining rates, and {the commission immediately rolled the rates back. Judge Claycombe was given until today to reply to the Supreme Court's action, He filed a brief Tuly 9 asking the high court to set aside the writ. It contended that Judge Clavcombe did not exceed his authority in granting Bell an increase In rates. Observers also said the high court might take action in disbarment proceedings against Blaz
