As Emmy is a member of the privileged class of childhood, her mother reluctantly buys the set. While her child skips triumphantly along beside her, Mrs. N. thinks: “Children are lucky. 1 could keep my nose pressed to the window of the Bonton Dress Shop for six months-—but

” ” ” ; GIVEN THE fact of Mrs. N.'s normal human nature, it is unrealistic to expect her to
feel close and near to Emmy. Mrs. N. belongs to |
an exploited group; Emmy to the exploiting one. But were Mrs, N. to to levy the controls upon her daughter that she puts upon herself—crash would go class hostility. Emmy and her mother would be equals, With class resentment out of the way, Mrs. N. would say “No” to the expensive paper doll set. But with a rush of understanding, Mrs. N. would add, “Maybe we could manage to buy it next week. Anyway, I have a fashion book at home with a bride in it. And if you're careful with them, I'll lend you my scissors to cut her out.” "But no, Mrs. N. doesn’t do it that way. The tradition of deference to the lordly class of children is too much for her. So Emmy gets her doll set—and is denied the warm and understanding companionableness that grows between two peuple when each pulls his own weight in the at. Equal rights for you with your children is a sound recipe for making them your friends.
Timely Hints on How to Prevent Dry Hair

is handy and comfortable to
use, When you have finished the shampoo be sure to rinse and rinse until your hair squeaks.
Dry with warm towels and friction. Rub your scalp until circulation is stimulated. This makes your hair dry faster. Toss it about and then brush.

Scrolls Made Of Rice Paper
By GAY PAULEY United Press Staff Correspondent
NEW YORK, July 17-— Five rice paper scrolls in hand-brushed Japanese set Mrs. Heatherly Dutton of
Avondale, Pa., apart from every other American woman. Four of the scrolls are degrees from two of the oldest floral decoration schools in Japan. The fifth is a license to teach, which makes her the first American woman ever: licensed to instruct the Japanese in their own 2,000-year-old art. Mrs, Dutton’s interest in oriental floral arrangements began some years before she ever got to Japan. She said, “I'd studied with one of the few teachers here and had
prepared through in-bed beauty routines to present an attractive appearance to visitors.

Mrs. Dutton said that to Japanese women, flower arrangements are more than just ornaments for the home. They also have their symbolism, reflecting the Nipponese philosophy of life. As a result, every bowl of flow-

Gardens Let Alone
