AAA midget racing gets another ‘shot in the arm” its comeback which has been so successful this year at! Indianapolis W. 16th St. Speedway. For the first time in the history of National AAA MILW midget championship racing, the drivers will receive some Dav $1000 in lap prize money in the 100-lap title race at W. 16th {UCLA
Friday night, July 27. The lap fund is in addition to the
guaranteed purse of $2000
« «+ a purse that could go higher because the drivers are allowed 40 per cent of the gate receipts if the percentage is larger than the purse. Indianapolis businessmen are getting behind the 100-lap championship lap prize idea. To date more than $500, over half the laps at $10 per lap have been subscribed. 5 o ”
ALL OF the lap money subscribed will goto the drivers. The track will not receive any part of it. Informed of this new venture in auto racing, Troy Ruttman, king of the highbanks, crack midgeteer and 500 driver said: “This is terriffic. I have never heard anything like this being done for the boys in the midgets. They certainly will appreciate it. I'll bet that race is going to be a hot one to run in.” Troy should know and he’ 1 be there for the championship run. Jack McGrath, 500 driver and another of the midget headliners echoed Ruttman’s words. “It’s wonderful,” he said. “I know the boys will run that much harder and all of them will be trying for that front row.” Jim Lamb, secretary of the AAA, governing body of racing in the U. S., said in Washington. “This is one of the finest things I have ever heard of being done for midget racing. The businessmen of Indianapolis who ‘are sponsoring laps deserve conBy

ROCKY IS QUIET, well beand he {is
“He neither drinks nor smokes,
“Rocky is a frustrated ball Barbara continued. “He was very keen about becoming a major league catcher. However, right now, it seems to be all for the best.” “I used to watch Joe DiMaggio at Fenway Park,” said Rocky, “and say to myself, ‘now, there is my idea of an athlete. How easy everything comes to him. I'd like to be a ball player myself. “I went to Brockton High for only two years, and did not make the ball nine there. However, af= I played three seasons of American Legion ball, and got a contract with the Cubs’ {farm system. ” ” ” “THEY SHIPPED me to the Class B Club at Fayetteville, N. C., but it was no go. I had played football, and I had punched the heavy bag, and apparently I injured my arm. “Anyway, after three months in the Cub chain, they told me it was hopeless. I refused to give up and went to Goldsboro. Same thing. Then I ‘tried to hook on with Macon. Finally I went back to Brockton, and decided to try the boxing business. I had done some fighting in the Army, and now I became one of them ama-~ teur beak busters. bd n ” AL WEILL, Garden matchmak~ er says: “How goad is .Marciano? . | Frankly, I do not know. He did not surprisé me-I-felt-that—the . worst that could happen to him {was a 10-round decision. “What does he need? He must polish up his right. It has power, but much of it is wasted. He is good winging with it, and effective with short, straight punches. But he has te perfect the punch. “His left is okay. His hooks are he shifts well, learns fast, and is loaded with confidence.” : Weill rubbed his hands in’ ex'uberance over the matches which just had dropped into his lap— Randy Turpin and Ray Robinson, Bob Murphy and Joey Maxim, Kid
Gavilan and Billy Graham, another Saddler-Pep fight, the Charles-Louis affair, and now
Marciano and a shot at the title, “Things are going to pop around here, from now on,” chuckled Mr, Weill.
