City Supervisor-Plugs Talent in Parks
By JOAN SCHOEMAKER
TALENT 18 the business of of Miss Ruth Smith, even if [her title doesn’t indicate it, "As music supervisor of the recreation department, Indianapolis Public Parks Department, she plans all the variety shows, band concerts and music activities sponsored by .the city throughout the year.
“I'm show minded; I like children, and I like to see them get ahead,” she pointed out.
Therefore, year around, she attends dance and music recitals, both popular and classical, as_well as any program where she might see talent.
Contacts Local Talent
PARTICIPANTS are rated on her program: bad, good and very good. From these sources, she contacts local talent for future park board programs. Every time the park board needs: music, Miss Smith is asked to provide the musicians. This runs from a show each week at the day camp of the Marion County Society _ for Crippled Children to presenting variety shows regularly in the various parks. : Miss Smith started in music at an early age playing the piano and then the organ in local movie theaters. When talking movies came in, she switched to teaching piano. In 1942 she went to the park board as a part-time worker. There she was accompanist for dancing teachers and choral oups. Gradually the park department’s music program grew until it needed a supervisor. Miss Smith was the logical person. She has built an extensive series of events, which often keep her busy from 8:30 a. m. to 9 p.m.
