Mothers Urged To Start Early >
By VIVIAN SANDE United Press Staff Correspondent
NEW YORK, July 9— Mothers should start talking to their babies as soon as they bring them home from the hospital. If the baby isn't talking back by the time he’s 32 months old, his parents should seek the help of a speech therapist, So says dark-haired Miss Doris Trepel, head of the first speech clinie for mentally retasites) children here. The clinic was opened at the. Flower Fifth Avenue Hospital through a grant by the Lena Invalid Aid Society. Since its opening, some 50 children from three to 12 years old have been diagnosed, Some stuttered or lisped, some could not talk because of physi-
cal handicaps. Others: would not| talk because of mental disorders.
For all of these, the clinic uses the latest findings in psychology, psychiatry, sociology and speech| therapy, to make them willing or | able to talk.
Latest Methods
In the clinic, children are taught] to talk with picture books, mir rors, and other props. They are trained to use their lips by blow- | ing a feather on a piece of paper, | or by sucking their favorite drink| through a plastic straw, or blow-| ing out a candle. Each child gets one half an| hour's individual attention a day, | | and mothers are instructed to work with their children at home. Times photo by Henry E. Glesing Jr.
