Bull Just a Butchered Light Heavy Now
| He's never learned to punch blueprint there can be no oboe
By JOE WILLIAMS Scripps-Howard Sports Writer
NEW YORK, June 28—Edwin Lee O'Conarty, alias Bob Murphy, won the back alley championship of Yankee long-range De is incredibly awk-| . Stadium last night when ht punched and cut Jake LaMotta,| ey fighter in the game Who|in the game today.is Harry (Kid) | the defending champion, so severely the brawl had to be does not have a left jab. It is Matthews of Seattle. stopped at the end of the seventh round, It was a technical knockout only in the sense that the
referee did not engage in.the customary mathematics. From the start of the fourth
round it had been obvious LaMotta was bucking the inevitable. After that it was only a question of when. There was no longer any authority in LaMotia's attack, his stamina had begun to ebb and along with it his spirit. o o a THE RED-HEADED Irishman from San Diego, a facial reminder of Frank Moran in his youthful days, who is what is known in the trade as a hungry fighter, gorged himself to the full on LaMotta's short ribs. Apparently the only way he can fight is in close. From beginning to end he crowded lL.aMotta and banged away at the body. It was what the police would call an inside job. The fight could’ have been staged in a phone booth. Most of the action, and what there was of it was thoroughly authentic, was head to head. “They fight like bosom friends” observed Lester Bromberg, WorldTelegram and Sun boxing writer.
This was LaMotta’s first appearance as a light heavyweight after the loss of his middleweight championship to Ray Robinson last winter, It probably will be his last. And since the Bronx Bull has always enjoyed a wide and enthusiastic unpopularity his retirement no doubt would come as cheering news to many. There are several ways to explain why the Bull was butchered. (A) He never recovered from the slashing beating he took from Robinson. (B) At 175, heaviest in his career, he was slow and sluggish. (C) The oppressive heat intensified by the battery of overhead lights. (D) A diminishing Zest for the rugged business, = = 2 ANY OR all may have contributed but in the final analysis he was beaten by a stronger man
Glenn Cage Team Gives Up Crown
TERRE HAUTE, Ind. June 28
(UP)—Glenn High School, suspended from the IHSAA two weeks ago for using an ineligible player last year, has been forced to give up its Wabash Valley Association basketball title. The Wabash Association ruled unanimously yesterday that Glenn, which used Star Center! Charley Session during the 195051 season after Session became 20 years of age, would have to relinquish its title. The crown will remain vacated.
Records uncovered by the!
JHSAA showed that Session reached his 20th birthday a year ago, thus becoming too old for prep competition. Glenn won the title from KEIlettsville Jan. 27, winning 48 to 40, The school was suspended June 15 until January, 1952, but can be eligible for competition in| the state net tourney in February if the suspension is lifted.
