Differ Radically
The lingering antagonism to-| ward Robinson-—who had practically massacred Herr Hecht while flooring him twice—was reflected today in the resignation of Hans Aumann from the commission when that board announced its ruling. Apparently Aumann had differed radically. with Commis-sioner-Chairman Arno Koelblin, who believed Hecht should have been declared knocked out in the first round, “since he had turned his back to KRobmson's body blows and thereby caused kidney punches.” Usually when “a commission sets aside a referee's disqualification verdict, it rules “no contest.” But today’s ruling of “no decision” meant that the fight had been held, but that neither principal had won. Robinson’s title was not at stake in yesterday's scheduled 10-rounder. Although he scaled under the 160-pound limit at 157% pounds, Hecht registered 165. Twenty police rescued Sugar Ray and his wife from under the ring and escorted them to the dressing room, and later to a military train, despite attempts of the crowd to engulf them.
Robinson and Manager George Gainford admitted that one of his punches in the first round had struck Hecht in the kidney, just above the left hip and to the rear. But they emphasized that Hecht had turned his back to Ray after the punch had started. A combination of punches to body and head floored Hecht in what should have been the last minute of the first round. But Hecht was given two respites— totalling about four minutes—before he answered the bell for the second session. Less than 10 seconds later another barrage .to body and head had him on the canvas again, clutching his kidney.s
Grazed by Bottles
Midst yells of foul from Hecht’s handlers, and screams of protest from the fans, Sugar Ray adroitly dodged two hurtling bottles that barely missed him, and scrambled under the ring. Ringsiders and newspapermen cowered under their seats for protection against the dangerous glass shower. Jack Ellis, sports editor of the Army newspaper “Stars And Stripes,” was grazed by one bottle. Several fist fights flared up between American soldiers and German fans.
Muscles Stranahan
Trounces Blair
SOUTH BEND, June 25 (UP)— Frenk Stranahan went home with his third Western amateur golf championship today after shooting 10-under-par to trounce young Jim Tom Blair of Jefferson City, Mo., 7 to 6. Shooting some of the hottest golf in his career Stranahan rounded the South Bend Country course yesterday in a four-under-par 68 in the first 18 holes of his final test against 19-year-old Blair. He was five-up on Blair as they went into the last round. In the 12 holes that followed the muscular Toledo millionaire shot six-under-par to clinch the title. Blair, trailing the champion all around the course, made the first round in 76 strokes. He rallied somewhat in the last 12 holes with two-under-par but still could not match his opponent’s mastery.
