Keeps Keen Eye on 4 Test Case

The Indiana State Highway

Commission will keep a close

watch on a test case in which the {Public Service Commission may |revoke-the certificate of a trucking firm charged with “flagrant” violations of weight laws. Defendant in the hearing will be the Sims Motor Transport Lines, Inc. Chicago, which left a driver stranded in jail recently for an overweight violation. The hearing was ordered yesterday by PSC Commissioner Hugh Abbett, Highway Commissioner Sama! Hadden said the July 18 hearing will be “extremely important” to the cost and upkeep of state roads, Similar watchfulness will be kept by the entire trucking industry, which heretofore has faced only court fines for overloaded trucks. . ‘Extremely Flagrant’

Mr, Abbett said the latest Sims violation was “extremely flagrant.” He added: “Because the truck was so much overweight (9100 pounds of steel) there is no doubt that the overweight was made knowingly. I can't assume is was a mere error in weighing.” The PSC order pointed out that drivers of Sims trucks were convicted of overloading 11 times in March and April this year. It was the Sims firm, which Saturday, paid a $911 fine for John W. Lewis, 1108% E. New York St. its driver who was convicted in Lake County. Mr. Lewis was in jail 11 days because he was unable to pay the fine and the Sims firm was unwilling to do so. The truck company finally paid when Gov. Schricker ordered the PSC to investigate, This will mark the first time under the present PSC that a ck line faces revocation or suspension for violating the weight laws. ‘A Vital Case’ “This is going to be an awfully important case,” sald Mr. Haden. “It may prove extremely helpful in the fight against flagrant violators of overweight laws ,. . . I think it may be the greatest "thing that's yet hap-' pened. “If the Sims certificate is re-.

ce, Voked or suspended, it may warn

other trucking lines to take our laws more seriously.”

James Nicholas, executive oe.

retary of the Indiana Motor Truck Association, said the trucking industry is interested in what the PSC will do. “However,” he added, “there are some facts in the case that have not been brought to light.” He indicated these facts may excuse the Sims firm.

Cable-Stringing Marksman Unfair

To Yachtsmen IRATE WHITE RIVER yachtsmen complained today that a resident near their Terrace Beach clubhouse is rocking their dreamboat, with cables stretched across the river and with wild’ target practice. Representatives of the. White River Yacht Club conferred with county deputy prosecutors today on the possibility of filing charges against the resident near the club at 75th 8t.' and White Rivper whom they allege is turning waterway into an obstacle course. They accused the resident of| target practice which sent bullets whizzing by their boats. They also said two boats were damaged Sunday by a half-inch steel | cable fastened to concrete blocks, and floated through four oil cans in the path of boats. Prosecutors conferred on the possibilty of invoking a seldom used shooting at watercraft charge but said they would turn the matter of the cable over to the Conservation Department since two fish hooks attached presumably made it a trout line.

lu. S. to Keep an Eye ‘On Boss’ Paychecks.

WASHINGTON, June 19 (UP) ~ The government promised today to keep just as strict control over the size of paychecks for salaried supervisory and professional employees as it does on those of the ordinary wage |earner,

Salaries fall under the same 10 per cent ceilings and regulations that control wages. No salary stabilization board, however, has been established thus far to pass on salary increases granted to executive, administrative, professional and certain sales and supervisory employees.
