* To Bear Burden of City Cost in 192
Gasoline tax funds will pay the
~biggest share of increased costs “of city government next year, a
preliminary study of tentative budgets revealed today. Biggest increases for next year
' ¢ome in the police and fire de-
partment budgets where approxi-
mately 1400 men are receiving
$600-a-year pay boests over the
original 1951 budget.
‘Greatest use of gas tax funds will come in the police department budget, where more than
; 130 patrolmen are to be paid en- , trely from gas tax funds.
Fire Bureau Budget Up The Fire Department budget is
in the department include can- ‘ celation of a special inducement fund provided last year which gave cost-of-living increases to probationary and first-year firemen. Heavy ~- spending departments have increased their expected money needs comparatively little. The City Engineer's Depart-
ment has increased its budget
*
roughly $18,000, making the 1952 total more than $674,000. The Street Commissioner's budget is up $61,000, most of it + because of pay increases.
Hospital Requests Down
The health and hospital budget ‘is down more than $250,000 fol«lowing General Hospital's concerted drive during the pdst year to increase collections from patients. The Traffic Engineer's Depart ment has requested a substantial « increase for 1952. More than $250, 000 of a nearly $300,000 budget will come from gas tax money, up "$100,000 from last year. City Controller Patrick J. Bagton pointed out that the pre- . liminary budget figures cannot be used as an estimate of possible tax increases or reductions. He emphasized the preliminary figures are subject to change by , department heads, himself and the City Council, which will receive the budget for study on the first - Monday in August,
Clermont Arsonist Granted New Trial
Dalton D. Williams, 44, Clermont, convicted arsonist, today was granted a new trial on . Brounds of illegal confession. Judge Saul I. Raab, Criminal

after William's attorney, T. Er‘nest Maholm, pointed out that

NORTH VERNON, June 19 (UP)—Selection of a jury began today to hear the second-degree murder trial of Marvin Gordon King, 16, accused of killing his 3-year - old half-sister because he didn’t want to be her baby sitter. , Jennings Circuit Judge Fred 8. Matthews, who ordered a venire of 100 names for the jury selections, said a jury probably would not be seated before Wednesday. . » » MARVIN ADMITTED killing (Doris Jean Daniel last Apr. 19 because he was “a little sore” about having to baby-sit with her. He told Sheriff Charles Dudley he picked up a rifle and fired at Doris Jean after his parents forced him to stay home with the child. He wanted to work for a neighbor, Marvif said.
