Soviet zone propagandists, in their magazine serials, radio soap operas and films would have you believe that only industrial “activists” and those who score high
mance,
Nevertheless, widowers with furnished homes, women with doweries and “pretty young girls” are more sought after than holders of a Communist Party card.
Love Still Love
Marriage ° advertisements in Fast German newspapers run side] by side with Communists attacks on capitalism and American-style pin-up girls, but gain and beauty seem to motivate the men and women seeking mates.
“Farmer's daughter with furniture and good linen supply seeks acquaintance with the pur- | pose of marriage of a man with his own house” is a typical advertisement which appeared in the i Communist-edited German Week. ,
“Teacher, five feet nine, good! appearance, seeks love match with | pretty young girl” is another. | As bait, the applicants offer everything from automobiles, boats and dairy farms to a| “blameless past.” |
Big Business
Love has become a big business | in Germany, in the East as well! as in the West, It isn't exactly for sale but a small investment can| put you well on the road to finding a “suitable comrade for life” or just someone interested in “mutual recreation.” | Countless marriage bureaus and newspaper departments have| sprung up to capitalize on mari-| tal dislocations caused by the war and the excess of women over men. Six years of Communist rule appears to have had no effect on; the emotions that prompt a boy! to meet a girl. Take the “22-year-old brunette” for example, who advertised for “a man up to 30 who is interested | in movies, theater, opera, dancing | and above all is a water rat who likes to swim in the summer and take long walks in the woods.” |

future in helping to restore bone | to a wounded serviceman and be-| cause it is an example of a new, | mobile kind of bone bank that | may help hundreds of other| wounded. | Bone banks are not new. But | the. bones in banks up to now have been frozen and had to be kept frozen until the surgeon was! ready to use them. For use overseas this gave the Navy a difficult | and expensive handling and ship-| ping problem. |
The piece of bone shown here can be packed in a cardboard carton and shipped without refrigeration. And it will keep longer than frozen bank bone. |
This advance in bone preservation was reported by four navy doctors, Capt. F. P. Kruez and Lts. G. W. Hyatt, Thomas C.| Turner and Andres L. Bassett.| Working at the National Naval | Medical Center in Bethesda, Md., | they found that bone could bel preserved by the freeze-drying | methods used for preserving plas-| ma. Bones - preserved by this | method are not live bone, they explained. But when grafted they | act as a strut or trellis until the] body can form its own new bone.
