Home Economists Now Urg e 2 or 3 Wash Da

If you're looking for help in stretching that family clothing

budget these days, your washing machine can be a valuable ally. In addition to doing its vitally necessary job of keeping your family clean and presentable, your washer can perform yeoman service in easing the demands on your clothing dollar by: ONE— Permitting the family to get by with a smaller wardrobe: TWO — Making this smaller wardrobe last longer. To achieve these two aims, Thor home economists emphatjcally recommend the end of the once-a-week, Monday wash day habit and the institution of two or three times-a-week laundering.

This is no chore with a modern washer, With the interval between washings shortened, the size of the wardrobe can be reduced in direct proportion,

Textile manufacturers and home economists agree that the biggest roadblock in the long life of clothing is soil. It weakens a fabric quicker and more thoroughly than the bending and twisting the material receives when worn.

Clothing should be washed as soon as possible after it is dirtied. This insures longer wear because it prevents the dirt from setting and attacking the fabric. Also, it reduces the washing time. Early and frequent laundering is. particularly necessary for cottons, because soil is more difficult to remove from this fabric than from others, Cottons should be washed in hot suds (140 degrees for white and 120 degrees for; colorfast items), for from five to 10 minutes depending upon, amount of soil, After extracting soapy water, rinse in cool water] for five minutes, { Rayons, nylons and silks are particularly prone to weakening | from perspiration and other sof and, for this reason, should be| washed as soon after wearing as| possible. For maximum wear-| ability, put lingerie and hosiery in a mesh bag before placing! them in the washer. Use cooler water (100 degrees) because these fabrics give up soil readily. If you use a chlorine bleach on your cottons or linens, never use more than a half cup to a full washer load of clothes.!

Experts Tells How | To Handle Ticks |

URBANA, Ili, June 18 (UP)—| The worst thing to de with : burrowing wood tick is to pull him | off you, according to an expert] on the subject. | “If a tick is forcibly removed ‘after it is attached, its mouth {parts usually remain in the skin and leave a wound that may permit the entrance of bacterial in-

fection,” Dr, Herbert Ross said. Dr. Ross, who is the Illinois natural history survey entomologist, said ticks can be encouraged to leave of their own accord “by holding a lighted match or candle close enough to scorch them until they release their hold.” A few drops of rubbing alcohol or turpentine also will cause the| ticks to let go in a few minutes, Dr. Ross said. | Afterwards, he added, the spot of attachment should be disinfected. The ticks, Dr. Ross warned, sometimes carry the ' deadly, although relatively rare, Rocky) Mountain spotted fever, 1
