* $5 Million Plant to Provide 3500 Jobs
TERRE HAUTE, June 16 Terre Haute has its fingers in its ears, waiting for its biggest boom of the year. Little white houses are sprout. ing like giant clover heads in the Another story, Page 8 pastures which roll out from the city's edge. And the Chamber of Commerce is wearing a wide collective smile «not the usual glad-hand grin— but a real one, with reason. And here's a reason: Allis - Chalmers is building a! $5-million permanent plant here. This means steady employment for this city's 3500 “available” workers; it means a greater bankroll for Terre Haute shoppers; it means more business, more hous-| ing—more everything. | Jobs for 3500 The new plant will manufacture the compressor assembly for Wright J-65 “Saphire” Turbo Jet| fighter plane engines under a aub-| ]

But the effect this $5-mill'on project has had on this city is magical. “We're so happy, we can hardly believe it.” Mrs. Pear! York Gibson, Chamber of Commerce Secretary. laughs. | Mayor Ralph Tucker has met! with the Real Estate Board and the Chamber of Commerce. From! this meeting came a special ¢ommittee which will do everything possible to help prepare for the) new plant and the 50 families moving to Terre Haute with the company. i Plan Housing Projects Two new housing projects are being planned. . Realtor Paul Pfister announced that his firm and the NewlinJohnson Development Co., Inc. have agreed to build about 125 homes which will be rented for, the first vear with options on buving later. | Housing in Terre Haute Is! tight, especially since the building| of the Atomic Works at nearby! Newport, - i “Everyone in town is optimistic | 2hout the project” sald Mr.| Pfister. “Everyone is happy about | it-—even the other Terre Haute industries. There's no shortage of | labor here.”
Prices Fairly Stabilized
Housing has not slacked off in Terre Haute as it has in other] locations, Mr. Pfister reported. Loan agencies are sfill handling! mortgages and building has been Steady—about 650 homes were! built in the area last year. Prices have been fairly stabilized, he added.
