What do you need in the way of equipment to catch fish? You don’t have to shoot the family fortune on expensive fishing gear all at once.
A pole, a length of line, a hook and a garden variety of worm are the first requirements. Those, and a desire to go out and sit on a bank or wade a stream. But for the fellow who wants to graduate from the cane pole stage into bait and fly casting more equipment is needed. Remember, however, the rod and reel for both the ‘bait and fly rod have only one purpose— to deliver the bait to the vicinity of the fish, From there on it's up fo you and the finny. _ How much money should I spend for my equipment is then the oft-asked question. That 10 me depends on how much fishing you do and how many times during the year you will get to use your gear. A friend of mine had been a cane pole expert of long standing, but wanted to get some better equipment. We went to a sporting goods counter and got him fixed up

with adequate equipment for about $30. This included a bait reel, a glass rod, both of name brand make, a number of plugs and the necessary line, leader and what have you. In either fly rod or bait rod the action, not the price is the important thing. In reels it is necessary to have a good recl for balt casting. The reel on a fly rod, however, is only a place to store line. To equip yourself for fly fishing you need a fly rod, with good action, a reel, the line, leader and hooks plus an assortment of flies.
