Let's

A Realtroar— Have More § Of Mischakoff

By HENRY BUTLER

Mischa Mischakoff’s violin recital at the Odeon last night was one of the big musical things 1951 has brought

Be

r. Mischakof, whose somewhat redundant name prob- . ably Me his fault, is too seldom heard as soloist, aside from his work as concertmaster with orchestras like the

NBC Symphony. Like a good many other ace first-chair men, he has to

buck competition from soloists jealously promoted by New York managers, He wouldn't have been heard here at all if Jordan College of Music hadn't brought him in to teach a brief series of master classes this week, His playing is solid, in the best “bop” sense. He has all kinds of technical resources, all kinds of knowledge of violin literature and all kinds of ability ‘to do what different kinds of virtuosi do, without over-doing any one style.

Blend of Styles

To paraphrase a well known radio commereial, his playing is like & musical doctor's preseérip-i' tion—not just one, but several ingredients, He blends styles, ideas and evén technical tricks so that I imagine a fiddler could discover traces of such widely different Joi fornens as Szigeti, Kreisler fetz, Kochanski, Huberman, and 80 on.

And all this nicely blended compotind emérges tonally from the violin as superbly satisfying playing. Here's the man you'd like to listen to for a whole eveping of sonatas. Last night's opener; Handel's Sonata in D major; was in the best and most moving vein of classical music. |

With Dorothy Munger of the Jordan piano faculty as apt and facile acéompanist, the Handel Sonata sounded a lot more effective than the Cesar Franck Son-

ata inp A for Violin and Piano, which followed. 4 | Mr. Mischakoff was beyond re-'

proach in both sonatas, though perhaps he may have yielded a point or two in tempo to Mrs. Munger in the Franck. Mrs. Munger played the extremely significant and expressive piano part of the Franck sonata as if it had been written by Cecile Chaminade.

Needs More Courage

The Franck sonata calls for real work and real confidence from the pianist. The piano part is no mere accompaniment. Mrs, Munger ¢an do the most difficult and demanding accompaniments, like the one to the Falla-Kochan-ski “Jota” last night. I could wish she had more authority and courage in something like the Franck sonata, which is just about tops | in its period and vein. Mr. Mischakoff followed intermission with the Bruch G minor Concerto, which he played with great feeling for the emotional passages. As in all Odeon concerts, the emotional passages

’|neatly co-incided with police and

ambulance excursions on E North 8t. His :last group, the kind of thing often snobbishly regarded as too “popular” actually contained some of his best playing. It takes a great artist to make hackneyed music sound im- | portant. Mr. Mischakoff is the kind oe artist who couldn't play music without making it po] important.

For the benefit of ardent tans |

and autograph collectors, I might! add that he looks and acts 30 years younger on the stage than | {in the libelous publicity photos! sent out in advance,

The change of venue request was denied on grounds that Mr. Young alone could not make the request. The judge held Mr. Young was only one party to the suit as a4 member of the State General Education Commission.

Both sides yesterday reiterated
