By ARTHUR J. SNIDER ATLANTIC CITY, N.J., June 12 (CDN)—~How a dog under heart surgery was kept alive for three hours by breathing through the lungs of another dog was described here recently. The fantastic operation was carried out at the Children's Memorial Hospital in Chicago by Dr. Willis Potts, world-famous blue baby surgeon, and his associates. He sald it had no practical value at the moment but was simply an experiment to show that “foreign” lungs can be a workable organ for respiration. The experience is part of an intensive search for ways of keeping the patient alive so that the range of heart surgery, now eéntering the heart's interior, can some day be extended even further.
