Alaska, Hawaii Statehood Delay Grows

Bills Await Action

WASHINGTON, June 11 -~8tatehood for Alaska and Hawaii, which seemed near durIng the last Congress, is not so good a prospect in this one. Technically, the Senate could vote on both questions at any time. The bills have been approved by the Senate. Interior Committee. But they can't be called up on the Senate floor until Majority Leader Ernest W. McFarland. and his policy committee agree to give them the green light. This probably won't happen before fall, and maybe not until next year... Meanwhile statehood advocates on the House side have decided to wait until the Senate acts. They figure both bills will pass the House anyway—the House passed them both last year and passed the Hawaii bill alone during the 80th Congress.

Sentiment Still High

National sentiment for state- | hood is still high, acording to| Alaskan Delegate E. L. Bartlett] and Hawaiian Delegate Jaseph Farrington. Newspaper editorial support, Gallup polls and: other Indications of popular opinion] have been overwhelmingly in| favor of the bills in recent years. Statehood is not a party mat- | ter, although the Democrats have | urged it more strongly than have the Republicans, In Congress, some of the strongest supporters | as well as opponents are of both | parties. This is due partly to the | fact that Hawail generally votes Republican and Alaska Demo- | cratic. Big business interests, espe-| cially the fishing industry, | strongly oppose Alaska statehood | because under territorial law they | have to pay smaller taxes than! they would to a state. Opposition of some southern Democrats to Hawaii statehood | is based on racial prejudices, as| persons of oriental blood out-| number whites there, have full] rights and might be elected to
