Mrs. W. was a leader in appreciation of her home. That's
why her children appreciated it. Children’s attitudes toward home chores reflect their parents’ feeling for those homes. If we complain about them, Harry and Emmy will do their chores resentfully. If we take our homes for granted, they will ‘still protest. If we feel a conscious sense oi gratitude for our homes, Harry and Emmy will do their chores willingly.

Of course when Harry and Emmy make a fuss about mowing the lawn and dusting the living room, orders have to be given. But to let it go at that is pretty arbitrary of us. We shouldn't be satisfied with mere compliance to orders. Getting the lawn mowed, the living roony dusted is important; but winning appreciation for the home with the lawn and the living room from Harry and Emmy is more important.
Leadership is the art of persuasion, - of impressing others so vividly with our own thoughts and feelings that they begin to feel and think as we do. To lead the young in appreLlation of home, we have to give more than lip service to the idea that homes are furnished, not by mahogany, and glassware, but by peace and joy. We have to mean it when we say, “Of course, envy, dis-

content and self-pity in homes make the most comfortable chair uneasy, the tastiest meal indigestible.” We have to really believe that homes are made by the feelings and thoughts of the people who live in them. Not many of us really believe that. Instead, we pride ourselves on being practical. To * say that appreciation maintains a home is a pretty sentiment,
but most of us doubt if it has |rewrapped in its own turkey skin, any bearing on the problem of |now is being packaged.
