prices about war with Russia, ha great question mark about Turkey today is: If the Russians sweep around its eastern flank, Iran and into the rich oil fields of northern. Iraq, will it fight? Is Turkey, with its commendable record in Korea, a twosway ally in the Middle East. doth eastward and westward?
Best Guarantee, but—
The agreeable little foreign minister is not making any flat promises, He says: ‘I believe that the best guarantee of general security we can find at present is the entrance of Turkey into the, North Atlantic Pact.’ His policy seems to be to cover] key in the West with an alce committing the U, 8. to t at its side there, and let
” on Turkey's eastern flank would be south for the Persian Gulf’s oil, with the rough mountains of eastern Turkey to fend off the invader, Mr. Koprulu says, however: “Turkey wants even more to show her good will than to defend herself.” “The trouble with the North Atlantic Pact is that it is an ete system of secyrity. To omplete it, one must attich the eaftern Mediterranean, which is a strategic region of prime importance, to a ring of security. In this way we can make a solid chain of defense in the Mediterranean.” When they made their last important foreign alliance, in 1939, the Turks agreed with Britain and France to help each other in case of war in the eastern Mediterranean. They were joined with Greece and Romania in this alliance. The Turkish price for entrance was a portion of Syria, now the useful harbor of Iskenderun.
Escape Clause
‘An escape clause in this pact] protects Turkey from having to fight, Rusaia. The question some, i diplomats are asking Is whether Turkey would use this! pact as a reason for not carrying out Atlantic Treaty obliga-/ tions, if Russia struck Yugoslavia or moved in Central Europe. | The prevailing opinion is that the genial Mr. Koprulu would throw his weight in the direction “Turkey fighting, as it has in| ¢ . But Mr. Koprulu does not ay the 1939 pact is dead. Asked! tblank, he replied genially:/ pact today is still alive, but it has only symbolic importance. In other words, the escape clause is. theoretical.” Copyright, 1951, for The Indianapolis Times
