The artists contrived to give a feeling of depth to the picture which is quite remarkable. ‘They worked chiefly in greens and blues bringing to life the Palestinian hills in the distance, the river and trees. Ferns, shrubs and other greenery native to the Near East give a pleasing softness to the pleture. ” TO REALLY oprocinle it, you should drop in the big brick church with the white columns, 17th and Martindale, and look it over. The Rev. Mr, Brown will show it to you with an obviously deep satisfaction. “I baptise anybody who has . reached the age of accountability who wishes to lead a new life and join the church,” the pastor explained: This means that a child or adult who understands the meaning of the ceremony may request to be baptized. ‘ The services are held meénthly ix the évening and make a high point in the year’s events. The bapistry is in the very center of the sanctuary behind the pulpit. You can imagine how it dominates the scene when a group of persons are being baptized, one by one,

told me: “Baptism is an expression of in: ward change, he said, a throwing off of the old man and resurrecting a new man. It is an initial rite on coming into church membership symbolic of the death and resurrection of Christ.” Candidates who also wear white for the baptismal ceremony will proceed to dressing rooms and quickly change to dry clothing for the last phase of the service. The lights will flash on. The congregation will sing a traditional song such as “Thank God I'm Free at Last” or “Leaning on the Everlasting Arms.” All present will press forward to give ‘warm and cheery congratulations and handshakes to the newly baptised. It pleases the young painters as well St. John's pastor to talk about the mural. They worked on it at night at the Herron School. Neither of them wished to impress his individual style upon it. For that would have made it fail to convey a uniform message. » = - AND SO THEY constantly exchanged places and lingered only the shortest possible time in one spot. They painted on masonite backed with wood. Before taking nip their brushes, the artists made sketches. The, Rev. Mr. Brown chose from them the one He liked the - best. / Both] young men then did their best | to earry out the conditions of the selected sketch,

The 8t. John Church is a growing institution. The members, who numbered just 52 when the pas-| tor came here in 1948, now have increased to nearly 600. Last year, they built the new church.
