4 Hoosiers Among Prize Winners in Custom Car Show

The second annual Indianapolis Custom Car Show, which played to more than 25,000 people in its B-day stint at the Manufacturers Building, State Fair Grounds, closed last night. Prizes totaling $5000 and trophies were awarded to the 75 ontrants, and four Hdosiers were among the top winners. Holden Koto, South Bend, took first in the sports car class with his Alpha-Romeo. Second place went to Karl Kleve, Cincinnati and third to Donovan Robinson, Stilesville. B. F. Harris, Champaign, Ill, walked off with top honors in the custom car class. J. A. Wright, Covington, Va. was second, and Robert X. Metz, Shelbyville, third. In the hot rod class, Robert Hamke, Indianapolis, was first, W. H. Waddill, Flint, Mich., was second, and G. Lynn Wineland, Dayton, O., third. The Ned Nickels award for the most beautiful car of the show went to the Cunningham brothers, Don and Bill, of Indianapolis. Mr. Nickels, a designer with General Motors, made the presentation.

Hoosier, 18, Hops Along on Stolen Airline Credit Card

CHICAGO, May 31 (UP)—An 18-year-old Indiana. boy, armed with a stolen airline credit card, traveled 10,000 miles in three days and was taking off for Florida when police ended his tour, { James Coffman, Muncie, told police today that he got “dejected” trying to sell magazine subscriptions in Chicago and decided to try a life of crime. ! Saturday, he broke into a brokerage firm and, among. other things, picked up the unsigned credit card. The next day he tried the card out at Midway Airport and found it was good for a trip to Washn. After an hour stopover, he got on a Chicago-bound plane and thought things over. ” -

“THAT'S WHEN I decided to have some fun,” he said. “It was just one trip after another. I went to Los Angeles, Reno, Salt Lake City, Seattle and New York. “Boy, did I have fun!” But an eagle-eyed clerk got suspicious “because I saw that kid getting on a plane every day” and called the police. The law stepped in just as Coffman was boarding a plane for Florida. He said Hawall would have been his next stop. “I had a wonderful time,” he said wistfully in jail today.

‘Hoosier’'s Heroism | Wins Silver Star

A young Indianapolis soldier's heroism in giving his own life to cover the escape of his comrades in Korea last Nov. 5, won for him one of the nation’s high-!

est military decorations, the Silver Star. The posthumous award was made at Camp Atterbury recently to his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Harry R. Stafford, 412 E. 10th! 8t. Their son, Pfc. Richard Stafford, was cited for his bravery in voluntarily remaining in an exposed position to cover the movements of his comrades. Pfc. Stafford enlisted in the Army in December, 1948. He was stationed in Japan two years and joined the 27th Regiment of the 25th Infantry Division in Korea last July. He was wounded July: 26, sent to a hospital im Japan, and returned to duty a month later. Before entering service, he attended Technical High School.

Seek Expelled Student

In Divorce Death Quiz BRUNSWICK, Me, May 31 (UP)—Police sought an expelled college student today for questioning in the slaying of a 24-year-old divorcee found strangled with her red scarf in a flower garden near Bowdoin College campus. The youth, a resident of Walpole, Mass, was known to have ‘been friendly with Mrs. Shirley Murray Coolen and was to have dated her Saturday night when she was killed. College officials said the youth was expelled last week for stealing alcohol from the college laboratory,

Tornadoes Rip Nebraska Killing One, Injuring 12

IMPERIAL, Neb. May 31 (UP) —Two tornadoes ripped across parts of Nebraska yesterday, killIng one person and injuring 12 others. The victim was 77- year-old _.Charlie Harschburger, Imperial. A twister overturned his car and pinned him under it. A passenger, Fred Tember, Imperial, was inJured.
