IAC Experts Pack 900 Box Lunches
80 Per cent Hike Reported Over 1950
Nine hundred box lunches!
That's a tall order in anyone's book. But it's being filled here by the Indianapolis Athletic Club without fanfare for tomorrow's speed classic, the 500-Mile Race According to IAC’s genial German chef, Henry Bick, that's about an 80 per cent increase over last year. Preparing box lunches is nothing new for the IAC. The club has been handling box lunches for the Decoration Day race almost since the club was organized in 1924. Like many accommodations of modern living, it grew out of demand. At first club members asked they be packed for their guests staying in the club for the holiday track feature. Now the orders pour in from members for themselves and families, as well as for their guests, What about help, we queried.
‘Work a Little Harder’
“Sure. It takes lots of it.” Henry answered. “But no extra
help. Everybody just works a j
little harder.” Race day to the club's kitchen staff also entails a large break-
fast crowd, an even bigger dinner ®
crowd at night. “We draw our breath after race day,” Henry finally admitted. He's an oldtimer at the colossal project. Since 1944, he's been chef and went with the club about nine years before that. He easily recalls when orders tallied only about 150. The work is down to a system. Such a good one that Henry took off by plane Friday for his first visit with his family in Westfalen, Germany, since he came to this country in 1928,
Speed Packing Task So Fritz Fenk, sous chef, and
¢ Roy Niehus, purchasing steward
for the club, took over. Despite the fact orders are taken until the JAC’'s manager's office closes
ft tonight, all the preparation of
food and packing of the boxes fs finished before morning. Between 6:30 and 9:30 a. m. tomorrow everyone will be claimed. Several days before the race the sturdy pasteboard boxes for the lunches are lined in even rows! in the club's two squash courts just off the kitchens. Before World War II three pize lunches and three menus were planned. But since the race was resumed after the war only one— the favorite over the years—is packed. That includes crisp golden fried chicken (um-— um—um),

bread and butter sandwiches, po-| tato chips, celery, radishes, olives, pickles, hard boiled eggs, cake, an | apple, banana, orange, nuts and mints in every box. Plus, of
course, paper plate, napkins and
cup, even salt and pepper shakers. Fry 450 Chickens Should hold a man from breakfast to dinner. { Even the job of frying some 450 chickens doesn't worry the staff. “That only takes about five hours,” they report. It's the packing job that requires checking. After the boxes are packed,! double checked for every item, they're closed and counted into individual orders. Then they are loaded on huge trucks and taken by freight ele-| vator to the basement ice house.
|The boxes are refrigerated with-|
out being moved from the trucks until pickup time.

The Speedway has never released any figures on attendance for the “500.” However estimates have put the figure in excess of 200,000. No new members were initiated by the 100-Mile Per Hour Club this year. last year's race was stopped at 325 miles because of rain. Drivers must travel the full “500” at an average speed of 100 miles per hour or better to gain admittance to the club.
Oops—Wrong Skunk MARINETTE, Wis. (UP)— When Charles Pederson's pet deodorized skunk disappeared last fall he thought it had just gone away to hibernate. So when a skunk wandered into his back yard this spring, he picked it up.
It was the wrong skunk.
